ASF, Pakista

Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) Pakistan was founded in 2006 with the support of a UK-based organisation: Acid Survivors Trust International to support survivors of acid attacks in Pakistan.

Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF-Pakistan) is a Pakistani non-profit organization working since 2006 to eradicate acid violence from Pakistan promote human rights of acid burn and other burn survivors, through a peaceful democratic process. It was officially registered in August 2007 under Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration and Control) Ordinance 1961.

Mission statement: ASF Pakistan aims to eradicate acid violence from Pakistan and ensure that survivors’ human rights are protected and enforced.

ASF Pakistan mandate is to work with partners and stakeholders, through peaceful and democratic processes, towards the elimination of acid violence in particular and GBV at a larger level, and towards the empowerment of survivors so that they can exercise their basic human right.

 ASF Cambodia
Cambodian Acid Survivors Charity (CASC) is the only organization in Cambodia working with survivors of acid attacks using a holistic approach. CASC works on several different levels. For acid burn survivors CASC provides extensive support and skills training. To limit accidental acid burns CASC promotes education and awareness in safe handling and storage of acid. At a national level CASC works to eradicate acid violence by encouraging the establishment of strict regulations to limit acid availability and by encouraging the enactment of legislation which would classify acid violence as a public, criminal offence.

 ASF, Bangladesh
Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) has been working on acid violence issues since 1999. The ultimate goal of the organization is to eliminate acid violence from Bangladesh. However, at present there is an acid attack every two days. Victims of acid violence need physical reconstruction, support for reintegration into mainstream society and legal assistance. Therefore, ASF ensures the best possible medical, legal and social reintegration support to the acid survivors.
ASF’s focus is on its work as a coordinating agency. Thus, building up the capacity of the local level NGOs as well as the professionals involved with this issue, for example, doctors, public prosecutors and the police, is a very important part of ASF’s activities. ASF also has initiatives to engage the media, celebrities and students in implementation of prevention activities.
ASF has gained national and international recognition for its dedicated support to the acid survivors. In appreciation of ASF’s success, the Executive Director of the organization received the 4th Human Rights Award of Amnesty International – Germany in 2005. ASF is the pioneer and dedicatedly working specifically with the acid violence issues in Bangladesh; thus a role model for other countries having acid violence dilemma.

 Acid Survivors Trust International
Acid violence is the deliberate use of acid to attack another human being. The victims of acid violence are overwhelmingly women and children, and attackers often target the head and face in order to maim, disfigure and blind. The act rarely kills but causes severe physical, psychological and social scarring, and victims are often left with no legal recourse, limited access to medical or psychological assistance, and without the means to support themselves. Acid violence is a worldwide phenomenon that is not restricted to a particular race, religion or geographical location.Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) is the only organisation whose sole purpose is to work towards the end of acid violence across the world. Recognising the need for local knowledge and expertise in order to combat acid violence effectively, ASTI founded and continues to support the development of six partner organisations in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan, Nepal, Uganda and India. It also works with UN agencies, NGOs and strategic partners from across the world to increase awareness of acid violence and develop effective responses at the national and international level. AchievementsCurrently, the six NGO organisations that ASTI supports and partners are in BangladeshUgandaIndiaCambodiaPakistan and Nepal. Together they treat around 1,000 patients per year in total. (Note: These include both new and old cases. Survivors need on-going treatment often over many years. We calculate that 50 registered patients will result in a minimum of 600 admissions for repeat treatment.) Demand outstrips capacity. Our partners in BangladeshPakistan and Cambodia played a key advocacy role that led to legislative reform, taking into account acid violence. The Bangladesh government introduced acid specific legislation in 2002. The Pakistani government passed the Criminal Law Amendment Act 2011. The Cambodian government passed legislation in 2012.Bangladesh has seen a significant reduction in acid attacks. From 496 in 2002 to under 100 in 2011. This is a 75% reduction. In Bangladesh we have an approach that appears to be bringing about the desired goal of eradicating acid violence. This must serve as an inspiration for a global effort to eradicate this horrific form of gender-based violence.

    About Us

SAA is a campaign against acid violence. We work as a bridge between survivors and the society, as most of the victims of this brutal crime, which is much more grave in its impact than a rape, have isolated themselves after losing their face. Due to ignorance of the government and civil society, most survivors find no hope and stay like an outcast, in solitude. SAA aims to research and track acid attack cases and compile a data to get the actual situation of survivors.

    Our Mission

We work with partners and stakeholders towards elimination of acid and other forms of burn violence and protection of survivors' rights. The process of justice to an acid attack victim remains incomplete until she gets immediate medical, legal and economic help, along with the critical social acceptance. Our vision is to free India from this crime, which reflects the flaws of our patriarchal society and abusive attitudes. We want survivors to have access to fast justice and fight back the irreparable impact of this crime.

    Support Us

Any amount you can donate to us, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received and put to good use helping acid and burns violence survivors. Your help could help pay for dressings and medical supplies for recuperating patients. A small help could help survivors with vital physical rehabilitation after an attack, including physical therapy and nursing.
